The First Problem

This is the first problem/challenge. Work together with your class and then when you have the answer, comment on this post and include the following:
  • The answer.
  • If applicable, the strategies you used to arrive at the answer.
Uncle Henry was driving to Halifax when he spotted a big green gorilla on the side of the road. He screeched to a stop, jumped out of his car. He saw the outline of a number on the gorilla. He couldn't quite see the number, but he knew it was a 4 digit number. And:
    1) He remembered seeing a number 1.

    2) In the hundred's place he remembers the number is 3 times the number in the thousand's place.

    3) He said the number in the one's place is 4 times the number in the ten's place.

    4) Finally he said the number 2 is sitting in the thousand's place.

What is the number?

  2. The answer is 2,614.

THOUSANDS: If Uncle Henry saw the number 2 sitting in the thousands place, then the thousands is done. So the first number is 2.

HUNDREDS: Now in the hundreds place Uncle Henry
remembers itʼs three times the number in the thousands place, so itʼs 6. Now we have 2,6__.

TENS: Then he remembered seeing a 1, and he said the number in the oneʼs place was 4 times the number in the tens place, so 1 has to be in the tens place, since the number in the ones place needs to be decoded by the tens.

ONES: Finally, because the oneʼs has to be four times the number in the tenʼs place, itʼs 4.

    The final answer is 2,614.
